The beautiful undergarments that started out as fantasy sketches are now a real-life, ready-to-wear collection.
When it comes to lingerie design, Japanese illustrator and Twitter user @papao_pao is constantly blowing us all away with a number of unique, innovative ideas. Last year, the talented artist shared sketches of undergarments inspired by the robots of Mobile Suit Gundam, and this year, we saw a range that brought chess pieces to the world of lingerie.
Following the immense interest in @papao_pao ‘s designs, Japanese lingerie manufacturer Izumi is now bringing one of the artist’s collections to life as a range of actual undergarments that can be worn in the real world.
▼ The announcement of the release last week immediately received tens of thousands of likes and retweets.

The lineup is based on the artist’s “12 Signs of the Zodiac” series, which first appeared on @papao_pao ‘s Twitter account last year. The 12-piece collection has been divided into the four elements of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, with the first release offering up one sign from each category: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, and Cancer.
The lingerie set for the star sign of Cancer consists of a frilly blue bra-and-pants ensemble, with side cut-outs in the cups and band referencing the sharp claws of the crab and the colour tone and frills inspired by the waves of the crab’s beach environment.

Geminis are said to have a dual nature, as symbolized by the twins which represent the star sign. Its corresponding lingerie set reflects this duality with one black and one white cup in the sheer babydoll top and similar alternating colours in the pants.

Aries, symbolised by the Ram, is brought to life in this three-piece set, which includes a babydoll top, pants and a garter belt. The white shade reflects the colour of a white sheep, with the animal also inspiring the fluffy adornments on the straps and around the bustline.

The final set to be unveiled in the first release is the Taurus lingerie, which features symbolic colours like: orange, to represent Aldebaran, the fiery-coloured eye of the Bull in the constellation; blue, to represent the hue of the Pleiades cluster of stars (known in Japan as “Subaru”), and brown straps on the bra and pants to symbolise the colour of the bull’s horns.

All these four items can currently be pre-ordered from Izumi’s online website until 30 April. Prices start at a very reasonable 3,980 yen (US$35.75) for the Taurus and Cancer designs, while the Gemini set is priced at 4,480 yen and the Aries ensemble is available for 4,980 yen.
Each set comes in a boxed package, featuring the orignal anime designs sketched by @papao_pao, and customers who pre-order the sets will also receive a matching keyring as a “purchase bonus”.

With the new line of lingerie generating so much excitement on social media, we can’t wait to see the details for the follow-up designs. According to the manufacturer, four more sets will be released at the beginning of May, followed by the final four at the beginning of June. After that, we’re hoping we’ll get to see @papao_pao’s other collections come to life as real-life lingerie sets too!
